Just as Andrew Benintendi was starting to heat up, Red Sox manager Alex Cora took him out of the lineup.
Benintendi had reached base in seven straight games before getting the night off on Wednesday for the Sox’ second game of three against the New York Yankees.
The sophomore outfielder reached base four times Tuesday but Cora said he had been planning on giving Benintendi some rest for a few days.
Benintendi is 4-for-16 with a home run off Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka. In his place, J.D. Martinez started as the left fielder, pushing Hanley Ramirez to the designated hitter spot and allowing Mitch Moreland to get into the lineup.
