Adapting to U.S., Hector Velazquez's workload altered after elbow stress

FORT MYERS — The Red Sox have eased up a bit on Hector Velazquez — a smart, low-risk pick-up out of the Mexican League — because his body wasn’t ready to handle the full load of major league spring training.

Velazquez, a 28-year-old righty, allowed one run in his first two Grapefruit League outings, two innings apiece. Then he allowed three runs in his next two outings, one of them three innings, the most recent one two innings.

Some minor elbow discomfort cropped up.

“I really didn’t have an offseason,” Velazquez said through translator Daveson Perez.
