I’m not normally one to write about position players. In fact, of the 21 articles I’ve written or contributed to this offseason, only three have been about something other than pitching (Alex Verdugo, Kyle Boddy, and, uh, Fortnite). Today, I’m going to take a stab at looking into the other side of the baseball while staying as close to the pitcher as possible.
To me, the catcher is the most underrated position on the field. Having a strong presence behind the plate can elevate everyone else on the field. Having a strong connection with the pitchers can maximize their ability, being a capable blocker allows pitchers to expand the zone, framing the ball well can flip an at-bat, and a strong arm can control the running game which is becoming more and more important each year with the changing rules.
