The Boston Red Sox have a lot of offseason priorities to consider after a disappointing last-place AL East finish in 2015, with a front-line starting pitcher being priority #1. However, there are some other areas the team could address, as this version of our Red Sox Rumors Roundup highlights.
Alex Gordon An Option?
The Kansas City Royals are considered the slight favorite to retain outfielder Alex Gordon in spite of him declining his $13.75 million player option. However, the Red Sox have emerged as one of the early suitors who could swoop in and sign Gordon away from the World Series champs.
Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Red Sox may be willing to overlook their current surplus of outfielders to make a run at Gordon: "Executives tell me that Red Sox officials have always liked Gordon and so has new Boston president Dave Dombrowski from his time in the AL Central as the Tigers’ GM."
The Red Sox's first priority is rightly a front-line starter, but there's still rumblings that they'd be willing to pay for Gordon too, shifting him over to right field to take advantage of his defensive prowess.
Joakim Soria Connection
Boston Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski traded for Joakim Soria when he was with the Detroit Tigers, so it's no surprise that Dombrowski is targeting Soria yet again -- this time in free agency.
The Red Sox have expressed interest in the veteran reliever, likely enamored with the flexibility he has shown as a late-inning option. He spent the beginning of the 2015 season closing in Detroit before transitioning back to a setup role after being traded to the Pirates. He posted a composite ERA of 2.53 over 84.1 total innings.
There are a litany of other teams kicking the tires on Soria too, so stay tuned.
