Clay Buchholz has had his share of struggles for the Boston Red Sox this season, posting a 2-3 mark with a 6.11 ERA.
Those struggles have raised questions about his future spot in the rotation, but manager John Ferrell said he's not in jeopardy of losing his spot.
"Just go out and pitch to his capabilities," Ferrell said. "He had a very good bullpen yesterday. We've got a couple guys that are getting closer in their progression to get back to us. So it's just, 'Clay, go take the ball and pitch to your capabilities and everything will work out.'"
However, that may not be the case. Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) and Joe Kelly (shoulder) are due to return from their injuries soon and will be inserted back in the rotation, but there doesn't appear to be two spots available.
Sean O'Sullivan will be optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket, but Steven Wright - who started the year as a temporary replacement in the rotation - has been very impressive with his pitching, sporting a 3-3 record with a very good 2.36 ERA.
That has raised questions about Buchholz's future because of his struggles. Despite Ferrell's assurances, Buchholz likely has to turn his play around quickly to keep his spot.
