Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Joe Kelly hasn't suffered any injury setbacks in regards to the biceps tightness that he's been suffering through, but he may start the 2015 MLB season on the disabled list regardless of how he is physically feeling.
"The first time we would need a fifth starter would be on (April 12)," manager John Farrell said on Monday, via the Boston Herald. "That's all being factored into this as well. There's one scenario that could have us break with eight relievers."
Kelly walked off the mound midway through a start back on March 8th against the New York Mets due to biceps discomfort. However, he threw 32 pitches in a bullpen session three days later, then exhibited "no restrictions as far as pitches thrown or just getting warm multiple times" during an extended session on Sunday, per Farrell.
"I don't anticipate him not being ready at this point," Farrell said.
However, the Red Sox may backdate a trip to the disabled list for Kelly anyways to March 27th, allowing him to make his regular-season debut on April 12th while giving the Red Sox an extra reliever to play with.
"That would be all part of the planning and the thinking," Farrell said. "Not planning at this point, because that decision has not been made. It’s an option available to us."
