The Boston Red Sox have already added three pitchers this offseason to their projected starting rotation for 2015, but they might not be done if their reported interest in free agent righty James Shields is any indication.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, "the final Shields numbers are expected to be close to the five years and $110 million remaining (if the option is picked up) on the Cole Hamels deal, according to one major league source who was privy to Shields’s demands. The Giants and Red Sox are in the picture, and the Yankees may be another suitor."
After missing out on Lester, the Red Sox might be willing to break the bank to bring Shields to New England in hopes of finalizing a complete starting rotation makeover. If they indeed land the 33-year-old, some of the disappointment that cropped up when Lester chose Chicago could very well dissipate.
Shields posted a 14-8 record for the AL champion Kansas City Royals last season, pitching to a 3.21 ERA with a K/BB ratio over 4 and a 1.18 WHIP.
