If the Boston Red Sox have their way, they will win out in signing both free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval and free agent Hanley Ramirez within the next week or so.
Per Alex Speier of WEEI.com, "according to an industry source, the Red Sox are in advanced conversations with free agent Hanley Ramirez, with the possibility that a deal “could come together quickly.” As of this afternoon, the source said, there was not an agreement between the sides, but the potential for a deal is real."
Sandoval, according to multiple sources, is likely to choose between the Red Sox, San Diego Padres, and Boston Red Sox within the next week. While some might see Ramirez as a fallback plan at third base if Boston fails to land Sandoval, Speier posits that the team could be looking to move Ramirez from the infield to left field in conjunction with signing Sandoval to fill their third baseman role.
The Blue Jays, Astros, and Mariners have all been linked to Ramirez by several reports, but it's likely that the Red Sox's interest could supersede that of those three teams.
Regardless of what the team's actual aims are right now, this next week is going to be interesting and exhilarating one for baseball fans in the shadow of Fenway Park.
