We're just days away from the 2015 MLB trade deadline, which means there are plenty of rumors swirling around the Boston Red Sox and what they might do on the trade market. Here are two trades they could make:
Trade Manuel Margot, Garrin Cecchini, Matt Barnes to Brewers for Carlos Gomez
The Red Sox could be non-traditional buyer at the 2015 MLB Trade Deadline, looking for impact bats and arms in hopes of jumpstarting their championship hopes for 2016 and beyond, which has led them to Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez.
"The Red Sox are firmly out of the playoff picture and need to begin looking towards the future; a rental player is not what the team needs at the trade deadline," SBNation's Joon Lee writes. "If the Red Sox want to make an impactful trade this year with ramifications towards the future, trading for Gomez is one way to do just that."
While it's debatable whether or not ANY TEAM is out of the playoff picture in the current American League and AL East logjams, Gomez is still an intriguing trade option to consider. Boston's outfield is stacked, but landing Gomez on a budget $9 million deal may be tempting -- regardless of his relative drop in power production (8 HR) in 2015.
Margot and Cecchini are very talented outfielders that are very young (20 and 23 years old, respectively), but are stuck behind a lot of other very good outfielders in Boston, making them expendable. Barnes is a talented, though inconsistent, righty, but is looking more like a bullpen arm in the majors instead of a starter.
Trade Mike Napoli to Pirates for JaCoby Jones, Connor Joe
The Pirates have considered acquiring Mike Napoli from the Boston Red Sox, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that the Red Sox weren’t getting any interest in Napoli, who they are trying to deal but has hit just .205/.301/.372 in 335 plate appearances this season. Pittsburgh is hoping he can rebound and potentially help the Pirates against lefties, while easing their dependence on Pedro Alvarez, who has struggled in the field at first.
Boston won't get a big return for Napoli, but Jones and Joe are two young, promising, athletic infielders.
