The Boston College Varsity Club and Boston College Athletics honored Pete Frates with the BC Varsity Club Medal on Thursday for his service. Varsity Club President Richard J Schoenfield, Athletic Director Martin Jarmond, Head Baseball Coach Mike Gambino, and Senior Associate Athletics Director Vaugn Williams were all present in the Frates home for the ceremony.
Frates, a former BC outfielder with over 100 starts, was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 27. Since his diagnosis he has championed ALS awareness and raised money to find a cure, most famously in 2014 through the Ice Bucket Challenge. Frates’ efforts through social media led to a national phenomenon and raised over $220 million.
