CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The members of the Boston College baseball team grabbed their buckets and ice and, for the fourth August in a row, dumped freezing water their heads in honor of former captain and ALS advocate Pete Frates.
In the summer of 2014, Frates championed the Ice Bucket Challenge through the use of social media. Along with the amount of awareness brought to ALS, over $220 million was raised to help find a cure. In May 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first treatment for ALS in 22 years. Scientists credit the campaign with funding the research for the treatment and breakthroughs in finding possible causes of the disease.
