AMHERST, Mass. – Boston College opened a five-game week with a 3-2 setback to Massachusetts at Earl Lorden Field on Tuesday evening. The Eagles dropped to 19-23, while the Minutemen improved to 13-26.
The game decided in the eighth inning when UMass loaded the bases with one out against freshman left-hander Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.), who had worked a perfect seventh. BC turned to graduate lefty Joey Walsh (Plymouth, Mass.) in the jam. The Eagles got a force at home and were a strike away from stranding the bases loaded when a wild pitch to the backstop scored the eventual game-winning run.
