In an NBA Whiteboard post Monday, FanSided contributor Ti Windisch made the argument that the Boston Celtics projected starting backcourt ranks as the best in the Eastern Conference, which got me thinking: where does the Boston Celtics backcourt rank among the NBA’s best?
In the New Age NBA, even the definition of a backcourt is constantly subjective and up for interpretation. As the league trends more towards positional versatility, and prioritizes spacing and skill over traditional positional designations, it becomes harder to pin down who occupies a team’s backcourt. Is LeBron James a point guard because he is his team’s primary ball-handler, brings the ball up the court, runs a ton of pick-and-rolls, and captains the offense, or is he a forward because he guards nobody…I mean, usually matches up with the opponent’s forward on the defensive end?
