31 years ago today, the Boston Celtics retired Red Auerbach's number.
You may be wondering how Red had a number, given his playing days were long behind him by the time he joined the Celtics as their third-ever coach, and first with a winning record (Bill Fitch and KC Jones would one day have better career win percentages with far shorter tenures). The organization chose to designate the jersey number to Red in honor for the truly monumental career contributions Auerbach gave to the Celtics.
Today also marked the 2000th career block of legendary big man Robert Parish.
