Since the infamous Billy King coup of 2013, the Boston Celtics have been accumulating draft picks while remaining competitive. It has seemed as though they were on the verge of cashing in those chips several times to form a win-now duo/trio of superstars.
It seemed like Boston was on the verge of forming a super-two (they would have been ahead of their time given how the summer went). Kyrie Irving longed to play with Anthony Davis, and Danny Ainge had the assets in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to get it done.
Ainge ultimately held off, like he did with potential deals for Paul George and Kawhi Leonard in 2017 and 2018.
