Tom “Satch” Sanders has always had a strong grip on perspective, and Thursday night at the Celtics’ draft party, he was perhaps the most well-equipped person in the Seaport Hotel ballroom to offer it.
Down in Brooklyn, the NBA had gathered a number of expected first-round draftees, their families and agents, along with hundreds of media types and thousands of fans into Barclays Center for its annual talent dispersal show.
A number of teams besides the Celtics were holding similar soirees in their cities to mark the event.
Contrast that to the day 55 years earlier when Sanders, a 6-foot-6 forward out of New York University, was tabbed by the Celtics as the eighth and final pick of the first round.
