Cedric Maxwell’s road to returning to the Boston Celtics organization started with a private meeting with Red Auerbach, his first ever. He always had lawyers or other personnel in the room. This time, he traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with the Celtics’ mastermind alone.
The Celtics wanted to invite Max back after a long hiatus following his trade to the Clippers in 1985. First, they wanted to him to go apologize to Red. He was initially confused why, but went anyway and Red embraced him. He’d later appear amongst the greatest in Celtics history at the closing of the Boston Garden in 1995 shown below.
