Brad Stevens' calm demeanor obscures his inner fire

Brad Stevens, on course like a schooner, rarely veers from his true self.

The Celtics coach knows that riffing as something he’s not is a sure way to lose players. He tried flexing a darker side during a first-season road game in New York that had deteriorated by halftime.

Stevens’ target was a large locker room whiteboard, which he reached out and slapped, hard, in front of 12 duly shocked players. What he didn’t see was Bryan Doo. The Celtics strength and fitness coach, trying to stay out of sight behind the flapping board, was hit in the head.
