We’re in the beginning stages of the Boston Celtics' offseason preparations, and there are plenty of plots and subplots to follow on the road to the NBA Draft and July’s free agent push. Here's what you need to know about Boston's free agency plans:
Boston out of running for Greg Monroe, Jimmy Butler, LaMarcus Aldridge
The Celtics started this offseason with big plans for free agency, but they're already out of the running for some of the biggest names available. Jimmy Butler has postponed all of his visits to other teams after the Chicago Bulls offered him a max contract (five years, $90 million) while Greg Monroe has already committed to the Knicks and Aldridge left Boston off the list of teams he plans to take a meeting with.
Will Boston outbid Orlando for Tobias Harris?
The Celtics need to find a high-level starter on the wing, and they've identified Orlando's Tobias Harris as their target to fill that role. However, Harris is a restricted free agent, meaning Boston will have to outbid the Magic to get the 22-year-old's services. Orlando did draft Mario Hezonja, who plays the same position as Harris, with the No. 5 pick, potentially signaling that Harris could be on his way out of town. What will Boston have to give up to get him?
Celtics make qualifying offer to Jae Crowder
Boston acquired Crowder in the trade that sent Rajon Rondo to Dallas, and after a great second half of the season, the Celtics desperately want him back. They extended a $1.2 million offer sheet to him, making him a restricted free agent. If Crowder does sign an offer sheet with another team, the Celtics will have the opportunity to match the deal to keep him in Boston.
