David Lee Trade A Steal?
The Boston Celtics took a major step towards fortifying their playoff hopes for the 2015-16 season yesterday, acquring former All-Star forward David Lee from the Golden State Warriors for what currently amounts to Gerald Wallace's expiring deal -- a contract which Golden State can pay out over the next three years with the NBA's stretch provision.
Per Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald, the trade terms may not be completely solidified as of yet, but the deal will still likely qualify as an epic "steal" for Boston:
Lee is slated to make just over $15.5 million in 2015-16 on the final year of his deal, giving the Celtics the option to negotiate with him with an extra year in the arsenal next summer or part ways and utilize the wealth of cap space created to make a run at someone like Kevin Durant.
Profile Raised By David Lee Deal?
"(Danny) Ainge still has plenty of time to clear out some roster space, but more importantly, he helped Boston's prospects in a big way for next year by adding Lee to the fold," Bleacher Report's Brian Robb wrote in regards to the Lee trade. "With another move or two, the Celtics could be working their further way into the Eastern Conference playoff mix next year while keeping their options open for the future."
While there may not be a ton of impact free agents left to choose from at this point, the fact remains that Boston could have a staggering $50 million in cap space to play with next summer and a deep playoff run with Lee as a focal point of the offense could be enough to pique the interest of marquee names when next July rolls around.
