Greg Monroe has chosen to sign with the Boston Celtics over the New Orleans Pelicans, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Monroe will sign a one-year, $5M deal with Celtics, league sources tell ESPN. Pelicans could only offer $2.2M.

The Pelicans were thought to be gaining momentum in their quest to sign Monroe, a New Orleans native, by pitching him on playing a starting role alongside Anthony Davis in wake of the DeMarcus Cousins injury.
However, Monroe opted for more money and the chance to compete for a championship with the Celtics even though he will only be in a bench role. Boston has been trying to upgrade their frontcourt depth and accomplished that with this signing.

Monroe reached a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Suns earlier this week. He was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Suns as part of the Eric Bledsoe trade, and he never quite fit into Phoenix's plans. The Pelicans are hoping he can replace DeMarcus Cousins, who is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles, in their starting lineup.
Monroe is averaging 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season.
