The Boston Celtics' acquisition of veteran point guard Jameer Nelson in the Rajon Rondo trade may end up with Nelson looking for another NBA job when all is said and done.
Per RealGM's Shams Charania, "the Boston Celtics and guard Jameer Nelson have had preliminary discussions on his future role and "what if" possibilities before the February trade deadline, but buyout negotiations have not taken place yet, league sources told RealGM."
Nelson inked a two-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks last offseason, enticed by the team's veteran core and at the chance of starting for a contender. However, Dallas remained in the market for an upgrade at the point, making Nelson expendable when they ultimately targeted Rondo.
At 32-years-old, it's unclear exactly what Nelson's role with the Celtics will actually be with the team embracing a youth movement in its attempts to rebuild. Nelson has a great locker room reputation, so don't be surprised if Boston keeps him around at least for awhile.
