MLB’s Evolution: How Many Wild Card Teams Are in the Mix?

In Major League Baseball (MLB), the concept of wild card teams has added an exciting twist to the postseason since its introduction in 1995.

Initially, only one wild card team from each league advanced to the Division Series, providing an opportunity for teams with top winning percentages to compete.

However, in 2012, MLB revamped the system by introducing a second wild card team per league, leading to the thrilling one-game play-in match known as the MLB Wild Card Game.

With the recent expansion of the postseason in 2022, there are now a total of six wild card teams in the MLB playoffs, with three wild card teams in both the National League (NL) and the American League (AL).
