The Bruins announced today that they've signed 27-year-old Matt Irwin, a former Worcester Shark and UMass Amherst defenseman, to a one-year, $800,000 deal. After spending the majority of four years playing for the AHL Sharks, Irwin has played two seasons in San Jose, registering 8-11-19 points totals last season. Additionally, Irwin played 13 playoff games for San Jose, registering one goal and one assist.
It's hard to say where Irwin will fit in with the NHL Bruins' defense corps; he could fit in as a bottom-pairing defenseman or a seventh D, possibly splitting the season between Boston and Providence.
