Bruins sign Brian Gionta to one-year contract

Don Sweeney had a busy Sunday morning from the blockbuster trade with the Rangers for Rick Nash alone, but he wasn’t done. He announced the Bruins signed Brian Gionta to a one-year, one-way contract worth $700,000.

The Veteran forward’s most recent role was Team USA’s captain at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. Gionta played in all five of his team’s games and put 16 shots on goal but didn’t appear on the scoresheet. He hadn’t signed with an NHL team this season in his free agency so he could pursue an Olympic run.

Gionta, 39, has enjoyed a long career with 289 goals and 299 assists in 1,006 games through 15 seasons with New Jersey, Montreal and Buffalo.
