The Bruins added some depth to their blue line yesterday with the signing of former UMass-Amherst and San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin to a one-year, one-way contract with a salary cap hit of $800,000.
The left-shooting Irwin comes with some offensive upside. In 53 games with the Sharks last season, he posted eight goals and 11 assists. He has 16-34-50 totals and is plus-7 in 153 career NHL games, all with San Jose. A native of British Columbia, Irwin averaged 1:20 of power-play time last season. In four seasons with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL, the 27-year-old Irwin posted 22-66-88 totals in 181 games.
