Earlier this morning, Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli had his annual pre draft conference call with the media. Chiarelli hit on a few key topics surrounding the team and the upcoming draft and free agency frenzy, including possible free agents, trades, and draft picks.
In regards to free agency and trade, Chiarelli stated that because of the thin market for free agents, chatter has picked up increasingly in the days leading up to the draft. In regards to the Bruins though, he stated that he isn't inclined to make any move and will not pursue one unless it "falls into his lap". in other words, unless someone comes to him with a deal, he won't actively negotiate one. Yes fans, that means don't expect the Bruins to land Rick Nash or Zach Parise this summer.
As for the draft, Chiarelli said that the Bruins are more looking at defensemen than they are at forwards. This year's draft class appears to be very highly talented, with any of the top 5 not named Nail Yakupov could go anywhere from 2nd overall to 5th overall. European players are abound this year, and it also projects to be a good year for New England draft prospects. The Bruins need to add to their stockpile of defensemen as they are already heavy on forwards, with an added plethora of centers.
One other topic that Chiarelli hit on was the status of prospect Alexander Khokhlachev, as reports have come out that the young forward is considering leaving the OHL for Russia's Kontinental Hockey League and will likely do so unless the Bruins sign him to an entry level contract. Chiarelli said that Khokhlachev will be attending Bruins development camp this month and that an announcement will be made then on his status.
