A former Boise State Broncos football player has been arrested and charged with felony Mayhem for getting into a fight with one of his then Boise teammates. The Idaho Press reports that Dereck Boles actually bit an unnamed Boise teammate, taking out a chunk of his ear in the process.
The Idaho Press reports Boles is being extradited from Lakeland, Florida, where he was arrested for the Mayhem charge. In Idaho, the Mayhem charge is when the attacker "unlawfully and maliciously deprives a human being of a member of his body, or disables, disfigures or renders it useless, or cuts out or disables the tongue, puts out an eye, slits the nose, ear or lip."
The original incident stems from a fight February 12th. During the fight, Boles bit off a portion of a current Boise player's ear. The name of that player is being withheld, although he did head to a hospital for medical treatment after the incident. Boles was kicked off the team on February 27th for a violation of team rules.
An arrest warrant was issued for Boles on April 4th, along with a $75,000 bond. Boles was arrested in Florida on May 9th and released to Ada County on May 22nd. The Idaho Press reports Boles is still en route to Idaho. Boles is facing up to 14 years in jail if convicted.
Boles was actually expected to fight for a starting role this year for the Broncos, who lost eight seniors on the defensive line. He played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman last year, recording one sack, four tackles for loss and 11 total tackles.
