Iowa keeps stability, leaves little wiggle room with Kirk Ferentz extension

Say this about Iowa: When the school settles on a football coach, it sticks with him.

The legendary Hayden Fry led the Hawkeyes from 1979 to 1998. His successor and former assistant, Kirk Ferentz, is now in his 18th season in Iowa City. Ferentz's tenure could stretch into well over a quarter-century with his new contract extension, which runs through the 2025 season.

"I think it's really reflective of the stability that's characteristic of Iowa, and that's one thing that makes our university unique," Ferentz said on Tuesday, hours after signing his new deal.

Ferentz is already in his 18th season, tied with Oklahoma's Bob Stoops for the current longest tenured FBS coach at one school and needs just 15 more wins to surpass Fry and become Iowa's all-time winningest coach.
