Inside the play: The flea flicker that helped keep Penn State's CFP dreams alive

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- His team down four early in the fourth quarter, his major-bowl hopes looking dimmer by the second, his reliable running back stuck in neutral for most of the day, quarterback Trace McSorley needed to light a fuse for his offense, lest Penn State fail to cross its biggest remaining hurdle of the season.

Enter a trick-play call from coordinator Joe Moorhead. And enter McSorley's response -- essentially: What took so long?

"He's not gonna leave one of those on the call sheet," McSorley said of Moorhead.

So on Penn State's third offensive play of the final frame, McSorley handed the ball off to Saquon Barkley, immediately received a toss back his way, then hit a streaking DaeSean Hamilton for a 54-yard gain to the Indiana 3-yard line.
