Entering the Olympics, there were some reservations about USA Basketball and their chances of winning a gold medal in Rio. Well, Team USA did lots to shred any and all doubt on Sunday afternoon and pounded Serbia 96-66 to clinch the top step of the podium.
Former Big East Rookie of the Year Carmelo Anthony completed his international basketball career with seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in the gold medal-clinching game. With the victory, Anthony becomes the first player in history to win three gold medals in men’s basketball.
Former Villanova Wildcats guard Kyle Lowry and Marquette Golden Eagles forward Jimmy Butler scored five and two points respectively in the final, and Lowry widened many an eye with an ankle-breaking maneuver.
