NEW YORK – Georgetown’s Alexa Popowitz has been named BIG EAST Player of the Year in women’s golf in a vote of the conference’s head coaches. Xavier freshman Mikayla Fitzpatrick has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and league champion Georgetown won BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players, but Popowitz is considered a unanimous selection since she received all possible votes.
Popowitz, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., leads the Hoyas with a 75.07 stroke average. The sophomore posted three top-20 finishes in tournaments this spring, in addition to taking fourth place at the BIG EAST Championship last week.
