The NCAA will relocate seven championships from North Carolina in 2016-17 as a result of the state’s controversial HB2 law, the NCAA Board of Governors announced Tuesday evening. Among the events moved, first and second round NCAA Basketball Tournament games.
The HB2 law, commonly referred to as the “bathroom bill” (Vox provides an explanation of the law right here. was the main factor in moving the events, as NCAA president Mark Emmert stated,
“We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships.
