The planned 330-mile drive from Midland to Dallas, as all road trips seemed to be back early in 2007, was for basketball. David Jones, who worked at the Midland Boys & Girls Club, where he coached a select girls travel team, loaded his 12-year-old daughter, three of her teammates and his 7-year-old son into an SUV and headed east on Interstate 20.

The only elements out of the ordinary that spring Saturday morning were the icy cold and the snow falling in West Texas. It was April 7, which happened to be Easter Eve.

Less than 100 miles into the trip, before they reached Sweetwater, Jones decided the weather was too much to battle.
