Here are five takeaways from Baylor's 42-21 loss to Kansas State.
1. Rocky debut. This was the first career start for freshman quarterback Zach Smith, made necessary by last week's season-ending injury to senior Seth Russell. It was a mixed performance for Smith. He made a couple of nice throws, like the touchdowns to Chris Platt, Blake Lynch and Pooh Stricklin. But he buried Baylor in the second half with three interceptions, the first of which was clearly a freshman mistake -- he telepathed the pass the entire way with his eyes and the Kansas State defensive back easily jumped the route.
