The Orioles are close to hiring former San Diego Padres and New York Mets general manager Joe McIlvaine to join the club’s front office, according to industry sources.
McIlvaine, 68, is expected to be hired as a special assistant to Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette. His priorities will be to help the club scout for the upcoming amateur draft in June, as well as train young scouts and front-office personnel.
McIlvaine, who pitched for five seasons in the Detroit Tigers minor league system, began his post-playing career as a scout with the Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers in the 1970s.
