As expected, the Orioles optioned right-handed reliever Mychal Givens to the minor leagues to make 25-man roster space to activate right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who will start Thursday's series finale at Fenway Park.
What was uncertain was where the Orioles would send Givens, who pitched a clean eighth inning in his major league debut Wednesday, and the team chose to send him back to Double-A Bowie.
There was discussion – and proponents in the organization – to send Givens to Triple-A Norfolk, where he could continue to develop while facing more seasoned hitters. But ultimately, the team decided to send him back to Double-A, where he has flourished under the guidance of Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills.
