Orioles pregame: Matt Wieters catching consecutive days for first time since surgery

Matt Wieters is catching on back-to-back days Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery.

Wieters has made 16 starts at catcher since being activated from the 60-day disabled list on June 5, just less than a year after right elbow ligament reconstruction surgery, but hadn’t started behind the plate on consecutive days.

Wieters indicated last month that he wanted to catch back-to-back days around the All-Star break. He will do so five games before that.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he was in no rush to have Wieters catch on consecutive days, happy that his All-Star and Gold Glove catcher could give the team starts behind the plate every other day and occasionally start at designated hitter.
