Orioles observations on Denard Span, free-agent outfielders and Brady Anderson's impact

Another free-agent outfielder came off the board Thursday when Denard Span agreed to terms on a reported three-year, $31 million deal with the San Francisco Giants.

The Orioles were interested in Span. He could have given them a left-handed leadoff hitter, and his .352 career on-base percentage would've helped fill an area of need. But the club had major concerns about Span’s health, especially coming off a season in which he played just 61 games.

Span, who turns 32 next month, underwent sports hernia surgery in December 2014, needed another procedure in March, missed time with back spasms and was shut down in August for season-ending hip surgery.
