This week’s series against the Seattle Mariners afforded left-handed reliever Brian Matusz an opportunity to overcome his early-season struggles.
Despite entering Tuesday’s series opener against the Mariners having not pitched since last Wednesday, when he tossed a scoreless ninth in the Orioles’ 11-3 win in Minnesota, Matusz figured to see work against a lefty-heavy Seattle lineup.
He had that opportunity in Tuesday’s 10-0 loss to the Mariners, entering for starter Ubaldo Jimenez in the fifth inning, but Matusz allowed both inherited runners to score and was charged with four more runs of his own in an ugly 1 2/3-inning outing.
