Orioles hoping early cortisone shot will help Kevin Gausman to breakout 2016

The Orioles hope their decision to give prized right-hander Kevin Gausman a cortisone injection for lingering shoulder tendinitis will help the talented 25-year-old have the breakout season they're anticipating in his first season as a full-time major league starter.

Gausman's timetable to return is unclear. Orioles manager Buck Showalter is still optimistic that Gausman will be ready for Opening Day. Gausman said Tuesday that he's targeting the first or second week of the season. The team has some wiggle room before they need a fifth starter.

Gausman said Tuesday that he had this ailment before, and if it crept up during the regular season he'd probably pitch through it.
