Orioles catcher Welington Castillo scratched with neck spasm; Showalter hopes to avoid DL

Orioles catcher Welington Castillo was scratched from Monday’s series opener with the Boston Red Sox with a “neck spasm that’s been bothering him off and on,” manager Buck Showalter said before the game.

Caleb Joseph will start in his place, and while Showalter said he hopes it’s not a situation that requires a trip to the disabled list, it’s not a new problem for Castillo.

During spring training, when Castillo was one of the players who was ramping up early for the World Baseball Classic, he missed a game in late March with neck soreness.
