The Orioles aren’t picking sides in the UMBC-Virginia rivalry sparked by the Retrievers’ upset of the top-seeded Cavaliers in March’s NCAA tournament.
The Orioles announced this week that they have added Virginia to their list of University Nights, a rotation of college-themed event nights that features Orioles caps in the corresponding school’s colors. The Cavaliers-specific game is booked for Sept. 12, against the Oakland Athletics.
Some fans from Maryland-based schools, including UMBC, weren’t thrilled.
In May, the Orioles had already expanded their roster from 2017’s three (Maryland, Towson and Morgan State). UMBC had a night specifically honoring the men’s basketball team’s accomplishment on April 20, and is slated to have another on Aug.
