The Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday announced that left-handed pitcher Bruce Zimmermann has earned the home opener start.
Zimmerman, 27, who grew up in Ellicott City will become the first Maryland native to start the home opener for the Orioles in 54 years. Right-handed pitcher Tom Phoebus last held that honor in 1969 starting at Memorial Stadium.
The second-year pitcher last season played in 14 games, earning his place in the Orioles rotation. Zimmermann ended 2021 with a 5.04 ERA with 36 runs allowed, 56 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched.
Zimmermann will make his home opener start on Monday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
