"Doctor" Paul Eicholtz, Known For Orioles Broadcasts, Dies

Paul Eicholtz was said to have a lot of jobs.

Jon Miller, calling games from the booth, would refer to Eicholtz as a nuclear physicist or a CIA agent planning missions to East Germany or Russia, according to a 1996 Baltimore Sun article. What he was was the engineer for Baltimore Orioles broadcasts over 36 seasons in his 55 years at WBAL Radio. He passed away Tuesday.

"He's probably seen more Orioles games than anyone," said Johnny Goldsmith, who succeeded "Dr. Paul" after his 2001 retirement.

Eicholtz start at WBAL came in the 1950s, predating the station's studios on TV Hill, assistant programming director Mike Wellbrock said.
