Buck Showalter 'encouraged' by catcher Matt Wieters' 25-throw session

Catcher Matt Wieters, shelved since leaving the Orioles' March 12 game after just one inning with stiffness in his surgically repaired right elbow, resumed throwing Sunday.

Wieters completed a 25-throw session, gradually extending his distance to 60 feet. Provided he recovers well during today's day off, Wieters will throw again Tuesday.

“I was pretty encouraged with Matt today,” manager Buck Showalter said. “We'll see how he feels tomorrow. He threw with a lot of intensity with it.”

Wieters also took live batting practice for the second straight day. Showalter said Wieters was planning to get some at-bats Tuesday in a minor league game at the Twin Lakes Park complex in Sarasota.
