Baseball's winter meetings land in Maryland for the first time in modern era

Major League Baseball's annual winter tradefest, which opened Sunday at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, had never before, at least in its modern form, been held in Maryland.

The last time the winter meetings passed this close to Baltimore was in 1958, when the convention was held at the Statler Hotel (now known as the Capital Hilton) in Washington.

Representatives from all 30 major league teams come together for the meetings, which have been held regularly in some form since 1901. The event includes seminars for team doctors, athletic trainers, traveling secretaries and other front-office personnel, as well as a job fair for those seeking employment at both the major and minor league levels.
