After being designated for assignment Friday to make room on the Orioles roster for rookie center fielder Cedric Mullins, utility infielder Danny Valencia was released from his contract, the club announced Wednesday.
Valencia, 33, playing in his second stint with the Orioles, batted .263/.316/.408 in 78 games this season. The nine-year veteran took over as the everyday third baseman after Tim Beckham went on the disabled list with a groin injury April 25, but saw his playing time decrease after the return of Beckham and the acquisition of infielder Jonathan Villar from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Jonathan Schoop trade.
