It was 30 years ago today, an old-fashioned, yet then-new ballpark opened that set the stage for ballparks after it as the Orioles opened Camden Yards.
Oriole Park featured Maryland-grown bluegrass and a ceremonial first pitch tossed by President George H. W. Bush. Infielder Randy Milligan gave his impressions of the new ballpark to TV 11 on opening day in 1992.
Gov. William Donald Schaefer cut the ribbon and newly acquired pitcher Rick Sutcliffe, shut out the then-Cleveland Indians, 2-0.
"It was a stadium like no other, a modern ballpark with a retro feel that kept the B&O Warehouse and made it a signature part of the ballpark," architect Joe Spear told WBAL's John Patti that day.
