NEW CASTLE, Ind. — Belief is a powerful tool.
Not many besides the Tiger faithful thought Yorktown boys basketball, which entered sectional play just 7-14, could win the IHSAA Sectional 24 title. The team beat rival Delta in the first round and knocked-off a hot Muncie Burris squad in the semifinal, a run to be proud but probably the ceiling of their potential.
Surely the 21-4 Jay County Patriots, who eliminated Class 3A No. 6 New Castle and already topped the Tigers this year, would dominate them. Yet it wasn't even close.
Unafraid, Yorktown came out firing with supreme confidence despite the doubters, hitting nine first-half triples en route to a 60-41 victory on Saturday at New Castle, the program's first sectional championship since 2010.
